The event is designed to kick off the 2012 general election race. Republicans are hopeful that McKenna can end their three-decade slump in Washington gubernatorial races.
The event comes as speculation continues that Christie is still being considered as Romney’s Vice Presidential candidate.
At an event yesterday, Christie told reporters, “I’m not going to answer any of those questions- those are questions for the Romney campaign. I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to comment and I won’t. You know there’s announcements to be made about all this stuff- 2 weeks ago I was definitely going to be the keynote speaker, now this morning I’m going to be the Vice President- tomorrow I may be nothing – who knows?”
A NEW NAME ON THE VP SHORT LIST
A new name has entered the speculation for who Romney will select: Gen. David Petraeus according to the Drudge Report. Patraeus is currently serving as head of the Central Intelligence Agency and was once called one of “history’s greatest military strategists” by President Obama.
Obama himself started the speculation when he mentioned it at a recent fundraiser. Romney reportedly met with Petraeus during his July vacation in New Hampshire. The White House downplayed the report.
Romey is attending a $1000 a head fundraiser at the Lake Terrace Hall in Lakewood according to the Star Ledger. It’s hosted by attorney Larry Bathgate and Ocean County GOP Chairman George Gilmore.
Nearly 700 people are expected to attend including former Gov. Tom Kean, his son Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr. (R-Union), Sen. Jim Holzapfel (R-Ocean) and Atlantic County GOP Chairman Keith Davis.
