18-year-old Jason Criscuolo was struck by a pick-up truck on Route 17 in Mahwah Sunday.

27-year-old Mahwah police officer Matt Lombardo prevented Criscuolo from bleeding to death by wrapping a tourniquet around his leg as he laid on the highway waiting for a helicopter to fly him to the hospital, according to The Record.

Criscuolo underwent a leg amputation at Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson. Police Chief James Batelli said he was told by doctors the teen could have died without the "swift" response from Lombardo.
