Cory Booker Fire Rescue Not Worth Much In New Jersey, FDU Poll Shows

In a January Fairleigh Dickinson University-Public Mind poll, 39% of Garden State voters said they had a favorable view of Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

Since then he’s made national news because he rescued an elderly woman from a burning building one night after work. In today’s FDU-Public Mind survey, Cory Booker’s favorable rating is up 8 points.

“Now we know,” says poll director Peter Woolley. “Running into a burning building to save a lady is worth eight points on your favorable rating in New Jersey. In other states, it’s likely to be worth more, but in Jersey you get eight.”

Overall, the poll is very good for Cory Booker. As it turns out, Governor Chris Christie is not the only Jersey guy with political star power. Cory Booker has numbers to envy too. Even if 33% of Garden State voters haven’t heard of Booker, 47% have a favorable view of him (including 28% “very” favorable”) and just 6% say their view is unfavorable, a stellar 8-to-1 ratio in Booker’s favor.

“For mayor of anywhere, that’s great,” says Woolley. “For mayor of a city in New Jersey, that’s fabulous.”

The poll of 797 registered voters statewide was conducted by telephone with both landline and cell phones from April 30 through May 6, 2012, and has a margin of error of +/-3.5 percentage points.

FDU will award Booker an honorary doctorate degree at its commencement ceremonies on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 for leadership “by vivid example.”
