The body of a man was pulled out of the Shrewsbury River in Monmouth Beach on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Charles Webster confirmed the person was a 56-year-old white man found in the Pleasure Bay section of the river. He could not identity the man, pending an autopsy.

The surf was rough along the entire Jersey Shore on Sunday with the moderate risk of rip currents according to the National Weather Service. Police have not said exactly how the man ended up in the bay.

New Jersey State Police said in a tweet the man was found while their marine, unit along with the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, were working to locate a missing person.
