Everyone inside the building was accounted for and no one required medical attention, but two police officers and 17 firefighters needed treatment, authorities said.

The blaze erupted about six months after a construction mishap left heavy fire damage in two units of the complex.

First reports reached police just before 1:15 PM. Responding officers saw landscaping on the building's south side in flames, which rapidly spread to the structure.

Police led by Officer Ryan Vaccaro and Detective Jeffrey Malone evacuated occupants. Both were stricken by smoke inhalation as firefighters arrived, and were treated for several hours at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, police said.

American Red Cross and Ocean Township Human Services staffers linked displaced occupants to temporary housing.

Firefighters from the Oakhurst and Wanamassa companies, along with squads from surrounding municipalities, battled the flames for several long, hot hours.

Fifteen firefighters were treated on scene for heat exhaustion, police said. One firefighter from Wanamassa and one from West Long Branch were treated for minor injuries at Monmouth Medical Center.

The origin and cause remain under investigation.
