A 16-year-old has been taken into custody by New York City police for the shooting at the ice rink at Bryant Park that left two people injured in a dispute over a coat.

News 4 New York says the boy has yet to be charged.

Officials say emergency crews responded to reports of a shooting at Bryant Park just after 11 p.m. Saturday. Police say two people– one shot in the torso and the other in the leg — were taken to a hospital. One of the victims was a 14-year-old boy who has no feeling from the waist down a family member tells the New York Post.

“He was just there to go skating with friends,” the boy’s brother told the newspaper.

Witnesses say a man sitting at a table said to a man walking by, “give me your jacket.: When the man refused, the gunman got up and started firing sending about 150 people at the rink screaming. He also struck his intended victim in the hand and hip.

Witness Raghuram Krishnamachari says he was eating dinner at a restaurant above the rink when he heard shots and saw people fall to the ground. “No one could run because they all had skates on,” he told the Post.  “Two minutes later, everyone was gone except one guy lying there on the ice.”

The park is in midtown Manhattan, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues and near the New York Public Library.

A spokesman for the not-for-profit that privately manages the park says the park is virtually crime free.
