How many times last winter…and the winter before…and the winter before that did we ask, “What happened to winter?”  Not just because we didn’t get much in the way of snow but with an exception or two it wasn’t even that cold.  I don’t think I used my ice scraper once last winter and I recall several conversations in which we wondered what happened to the often brutal months of December, January and February.

I remember snow storms that would allow us to go sledding for days.  We had a little hill in Seaside Heights by the Hamilton Avenue exit out of town and later we could be found at Ocean County College or the Toms River Country Club.  That was when getting a new sled for Christmas was a gift that got used.  Of course it was much colder as well so ponds and lakes would freeze and in Seaside they flooded the playground and it was used for ice skating. This was winter recreation and we loved it.

I don’t know what the reason…some will insist its global warming but we just don’t have winters like that anymore.  However maybe winter is making a comeback because it’s been very cold since December and we’ve received more snow than last year and who knows what is in store for this weekend. Clearly we are getting snow Sunday but we’ll have to wait and see what kind of mixture we get here in Ocean County.  Regardless it will have some checking their attic or garage for that sled that have not used much in recent years.

Right now spring seems a long way off.
