As the countdown to Memorial Day Weekend grows smaller and smaller, it got me thinking about the different ways people look at summer.

For most of the country, summer is pretty much when the kids are out of school. So, roughly June to September (give or take a few weeks on either side).

But, here in Ocean County I'd argue that we have a couple different ways to define summer:

  • "The unofficial start to summer" - Anyone who has spent any amount of time in a shore town is familiar with that term. Although Memorial Day Weekend is roughly 3 to 4 weeks (depending on the year) before summer begins on the calendar, once the holiday passes, it's summer for our towns!
  • The official start to summer - Summer begins this year on June 21st and runs to September 20th. If you want to go by official definitions, that's summer.
  • "Locals' summer" - Finally, there's that wonderful part of the year that a lot of us look forward to and affectionately refer to as "locals' summer". Once Labor Day passes and the kids head back to school, the beaches and boardwalks are ours again!
