Violent Storms Kill Dozens In South, Midwest [VIDEO]

Emergency crews are combing through shredded homes and obliterated neighborhoods in a desperate search

for tornado survivors.

The sheriff of Clark County, Indiana, says everyone knew the storms and tornadoes were coming, but after a certain point, there was no way to prepare. Yesterday’s storms spread destruction from Gulf Coast to Great Lakes states, killing at least 38 people.

Kentucky took a heavy hit with 19 people known to have been killed. Fourteen people were killed in Indiana, three in Ohio and one in each Alabama and Georgia. In Georgia, an 83-year-old woman died after she was washed into a creek after she tried to take shelter in a drainage pipe.

Hundreds more are injured, including a toddler found alive in an Indiana field 10 miles from her home. The 2-year-old girl is in critical condition at a Kentucky hospital.

Toddler found alive in Indiana field after storms

A hospital spokeswoman says a 2-year-old girl found alive in an Indiana field after violent storms is the

sole survivor of her immediate family.

Cis Gruebbel is a spokeswoman for Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky. She said Saturday that the girl’s mother, father, 2-month-old sister and 3-year-old brother all died Friday when the storms devastated southern Indiana.

Gruebbel says the toddler is in critical condition. She would not identify the child and says she could not provide details on the child’s ordeal. She says extended family members are at the hospital with the child.

Melissa Richardson, a spokeswoman for the hospital in Salem, Ind. where the child was first taken, said the child’s family is from New Pekin, Ind., and she was found near her home.

A string of violent storms scratched away small towns in Indiana and cut off rural communities in Kentucky as an early-season tornado outbreak killed nearly 30 people, and authorities feared the already ugly death toll would rise as daylight broke on Saturday’s search for survivors.
