VAX AND RELAX: Mobile COVID Vaccine Stations On Our Boardwalks

When I think of our boardwalks I think of perfect pizza, games and nostalgic rides...maybe even a new pet hermit crab but getting vaccinated? It may happen and it may not be a bad idea. Republican New Jersey assemblyman Ronald S. Dancer wants extra COVID testing and vaccination sites at the Jersey Shore this summer. He represents the 12th Legislative District, including Allentown, Englishtown, Manalapan, Matawan, Roosevelt, Upper Freehold, Jackson and Plumsted and Dancer is advocating for the state Department of Health to send more COVID resources to our beaches to help keep COVID at bay.

If he gets his way, mobile coronavirus testing and vaccination units would be along the boardwalk with a huge reach of people. Tourism contributes about $41 billion toward the state's economy each year and we want to keep that going. Personally, I still can’t get an appointment for my vaccine. I’m on multiple lists to no avail. I don't have any underlying conditions so I'm going to have to wait just a bit longer but it's more than qualifying, it's getting the actual appointment that is hard. I had a glimmer of hope when my mom and pop pharmacy in town got 100 units in this week but by the time I drove there they were all spoken for. Boardwalk mobile units may be the convenience we need to get this vaccine thing done.

Listen, seeing people vaxing while they tan is certainly weird but when you look at the financial pain that the pandemic has caused our Jersey Shore towns you start to see out of the box thinking as smart thinking right? In Asbury Park alone, social distancing resulted in a $700,000 drop from previous years in beach badge revenue. Maybe instead of limiting crowds, we can lean into them with mobile vaccine options.
