Friday, March 13, 2020…just two years ago.  The headline on the back page of the New York Post said it all…”The day the sports world stopped.”  The day before (March 12) the stark reality of the coronavirus began to make an impact for some of us when teams were taken off the court in the middle of the Big East Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden.  Things spiraled from there and before we knew it the NCAA Tournament would be cancelled and the NBA & NHL seasons were paused along with Major League Baseball’s spring training.

Of course that was just the tip of the iceberg as everything with entertainment was shut down including Broadway and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York.  That day we picked up our daughter as she left her apartment in Hoboken thinking she would be home for a couple of weeks…turned out to be more like 13 months.  Schools would close, businesses would shut down and life as we know it would take a drastic turn for the worst.

Two years ago we really could not fathom what COVID-19 would become…many of us including our President at the time were not convinced it would last that long.  Of course even the scientific and medical communities didn’t have answers because there was no play book for this kind of virus in modern times. It seemed like each day brought conflicting reports of what we should and should not do.  Truth is nobody really knew what would be next…of course it would be sickness and death in numbers that still seem staggering and inconceivable and they are still growing.

Two years ago…my initial thought was how could they cancel the college basketball tournament?  Turns out “March Madness” took on a very different tone.
