Toms River Police responded to the Oak Avenue area behind the Ocean County Mall on Saturday for a reported animal call.

Once they arrived down the street from headquarters, officers found two dogs, possibly Maltese, who are about 1-2 years old.

The dogs were abandoned, malnourished, matted and in need of medical attention, police said.

The female has been cleaned up and groomed and is doing okay at the Toms River Animal Shelter.

However, the male is currently at the vet undergoing surgery but is expected to make a full recovery.
