Opening Round - Preview

(17) Howell 81, (16) Manalapan 67 - Watch

Senior Zach Emery scored 16 of his 27 points in the second half and classmate Joe Dupuis poured in 24 as the Rebels (11-8) caught fire early and never let up in a high-scoring, round-one win over the rival Braves (9-10).

Senior Nick Gallo added 14 points and four assists while senior Dylan McVeigh pitched in nine points and six assists for Howell.

Senior Mike Cerreto led Manalapan with 23 points while senior Gabe Blackwell pitched in 14 for the Braves, who were within, 67-62, with 2:30 to play.

Howell put the game away on the free-throw line by going 14-for-19 to close out that final 2:30. Emery led that effort by going 8-for-10 and 9-for-12 for the game from the foul line.

Howell advances to Thursday's round of 16 to play at top-seeded Red Bank Catholic.

(6) CBA 86, (27) Point Beach 33 - Watch

Senior Pat Lautato scored 20 points and seven CBA players scored at least nine points on the way to a blowout win for the Colts (15-5) over the Garnet Gulls (9-9).

Junior Joe White and sophomore Peter Noble each added 11 points and junior Will Bradley added 10 for CBA. Rob Hemsing and Owen Pegler each chipped in nine points off the bench and freshman Justin Fuerbacher contributed eight in the win.

Senior Anthony Longo scored nine points to lead Point Beach, which played without junior guard Kevin Burns -- the team's leader in points, rebounds and assists -- due to a leg injury.

(8) Manchester 65, (25) Shore 27 - Watch

Senior Savon Myers scored a game-high 21 points and the Hawks (17-4) cruised to a first-round win over the Blue Devils (10-11), setting up a round-of-16 home game Thursday against No. 9 Brick Memorial.

Senior Amari Petty added 16 points and junior Evan Weiner pitched in 10 for Manchester.

Junior Liam Gajewski led Shore with eight points.

(10) Holmdel 49, (23) Southern 48 - Watch

Sophomore Ben Kipnis scored a team-high 18 points, including a pair of crucial three-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Hornets (14-8) escaped with a win over the Rams (9-10).

Kipnis buried a three-pointer to make it 44-39 early in the fourth quarter and knocked down another triple with 4:12 left to stretch the Holmdel lead to 47-42.

Freshman Evan Romano added 12 points and hit a floater near the right baseline to extend Holmdel's lead to 49-45 with 2:35 to go.

Southern shut Holmdel out the rest of the way and had a chance to send the game into overtime at the free-throw line. With two seconds left, junior Tom Menegus hit the first of his two free throws, but the second missed the mark and the clock ran out.

Senior Nick Devane led Southern with 16 points, while senior Jaden Anthony, senior Noah Schubiger and senior Josh Smith all scored eight apiece for the Rams.

(11) Raritan 53, (22) Jackson Liberty 33 - Watch

Junior Jack O'Leary scored a game-high 22 points and the Rockets (15-6) shrugged off a slow start to fire past the Lions (13-9) and into the SCT round of 16 Thursday night at No. 6 CBA.

Senior Justin Rivera and junior Lucas LaVilla each added 13 points for Raritan, which trailed, 15-8, after one and 19-15 in the final minute of the second quarter before scoring the next 11 points and rolling from there.

Senior Connor Gallagher led Jackson Liberty with nine points and senior Phanique Dupree added eight in the loss.

(14) Freehold Twp. 56, (19) Middletown North 53 - Watch

Junior Jayden Holmes-Cotter banked in a three-pointer from the right corner as time expired and the Patriots (13-8) won a thriller over the Lions (10-9) to advance to Thursday's round of 16 against No. 3 Rumson-Fair Haven.

Holmes-Cotter finished with 21 points and five rebounds, with 17 of his points coming in the second half after he sat the final 10 minutes of the first half due to foul trouble.

Holmes-Cotter hit a pair of tie-breaking free-throws with 1:27 left and Freehold Township led 53-50 until Middletown North senior Matt Kenny hit a contested three-pointer to tie the game with 19.5 seconds left.

Freehold Township got the ball into the paint on the final possession and coach Brian Golub took a timeout with 2.9 seconds left, with his team inbounding the ball from under the Lions basket out of the timeout.

Junior Malachi Harris got the ball to Holmes-Cotter in the right corner, where the 6-foot-5 junior squared up and banked in the winning shot with no time left on the clock.

Senior Josh Ibarreta put up 13 points and six rebounds and classmate Ryan Keegan added 12 points for Freehold Township.

Kenny led Middletown North with 14 points and sophomore Luke Sheehan added nine on three second-quarter three-pointers for the Lions.

(5) Manasquan 78, (28) Pinelands 29 - Watch

Freshman Darius Adams led four Manasquan players in double-figures with 16 points and the Warriors (18-4) ran over the Wildcats (8-9) to reach Thursday's round of 16 against No. 12 Ranney.

Senior Matt Solomon and freshman Griffin Linstra each added 13 points and sophomore Alex Konov chipped in 11 for Manasquan.

(7) Jackson Memorial 56, (26) St. Rose 45 - Watch

Junior Samir Padilla delivered on both ends of the floor with 18 points and six steals to help the Jaguars (16-5) run away with a win over the Purple Roses (10-10) thanks to a third-quarter explosion.

Senior Steven Bado added 13 points and six rebounds while junior Respect Tyleek pitched in 10 points for Jackson Memorial, which outscored St. Rose, 22-3, in the third quarter after trailing, 23-19, at halftime.

Senior Luke Farrell led St. Rose with a game-high 28 points.

(9) Brick Memorial 61, (24) Monmouth 39 - Watch

Junior Josh Michigan scored 17 points and senior Luke Braaten came up a block shy of a triple-double as the Mustangs (17-4) rumbled past the Falcons (11-12) and into the SCT round of 16 Thursday against No. 8 Manchester.

Braaten finished with 10 points, 16 rebounds and nine blocked shots for Brick Memorial, making a run at what would have been his second triple-double that would have included a double-digit block total.

Junior Brian Starrett added 11 points and senior Jason Ellerbrock and junior Jeremiah Crispin each pitched in eight for Brick Memorial.

Freshman James Curley led Monmouth with 10 points and junior Ta'haj Wiggins poured in nine in the loss.

(12) Ranney 51, (21) Red Bank 29 - Watch

Senior Isaac Hester scored 17 points and pulled in six rebounds to help lead the Panthers (17-3) to a first-round win over the Bucs (11-9).

Senior T.J. Braswell-Brown added nine points for Ranney, while senior Charles Anyichie and junior Zack Davis each filled up the stat sheet. Anyichie finished with eight points, eight rebounds and six blocks, while Davis put up seven points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Senior Brandon Klatsky also poured in eight points for Ranney, which took a 28-8 lead into halftime.

Junior Nick Valentino led Red Bank with 16 points, including all eight of the Bucs' points in the first half.

(13) Donovan Catholic 68, (20) Keyport 65 - Watch

Senior Alex Melon scored 16 points, including one of two key and-one finishes in the fourth quarter, and the Griffins (15-6) held off the Red Raiders (15-4) to advance to Thursday's SCT round of 16 at No. 4 St. John Vianney.

Seniors Jalin Butler and Nunes Bukula each added 12 points, senior Kyree Drake added 11 and senior Vin Coburn chipped in 10 to give Donovan Catholic five scorers in double-figures.

Melon converted a three-point play to tie the game at 59 with under three minutes to play and Bukula also scored as he was fouled to tie the game at 61 two possessions later. Bukula also scored another game-tying layup with under two to play off a pass from Drake, making the score 63-63.

Melon gave Donovan Catholic the lead for good by hitting the front-end of a 1-and-1 and Drake converted an acrobatic drive to give Donovan Catholic a 66-63 lead.

Keyport turned the ball over with the score 66-65 and under 30 seconds to go and Drake added two points to the lead with a pair of free throws.

After missing the front end of a 1-and-1, Keyport senior D.J. Thomson got the ball back following an offensive rebounds and missed a three-point attempt from the top of the key. Senior George Mitchell secured the ensuing rebound but his desperation heave from the right wing hit the back rim.

Thomson led Keyport with a game-high 23 points. Senior Anthony Longo added 15 and junior Terrek Mimes poured in 14 in the loss on the strength of four three-pointers.

(15) Central 62, (18) Point Boro 40 - Watch

Senior Justin Soranno scored a game-high 26 points and the Golden Eagles (14-7) stormed out to a 20-2 lead on the Panthers (16-3) through one quarter and never looked back.

Sophomore Miles Chevalier added 13 points, five steals and five blocks to help lead the two-way effort by Central, which will travel to play No. 2 Marlboro Thursday in the SCT round of 16.

Junior Noah Knauf led Point Boro with 11 points and senior Kai Messeroll added eight in the loss.
