Toms River, NJ Police arrest a pair for pulling gun on driver, slashing their tires

Toms River Police have arrested a pair of juveniles who allegedly pulled a handgun on someone and her friend and then slashed their car tires with a knife on Wednesday.

The victim told responding police officers, to the area of Hooper Avenue and Claudina Avenue around 5:00 pm, that she knew both the teens responsible for the incident.

Police said about an hour later, one of their Sergeant's spotted the suspects vehicle near Route 37 and Hooper Avenue and began a pursuit which ultimately had to be ended because of public safety concerns.

A short time later, the vehicle was found abandoned in a section of the Ocean County Mall parking lot, police said, and then several officers responded to the area and were able to find the two teens responsible for the crime and along with them, the weapon in question.

Both were arrested without incident and charged with Criminal Mischief, 2nd Degree Eluding, and Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose which Toms River Police said were approved by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, but as the investigation into the incident continues, additional charges are pending.

23-year-old Alejandro Huerta-Arias of Toms River was charged with Vehicular Homicide stemming from a March crash in Lakewood where he was driving 91-mph and ended up hitting a Lakewood man who collided with a traffic light as a result and died at the scene.

Toms River Police were able to safely prevent a suicide attempt on Wednesday when a man got out of his truck along Northampton Boulevard and Executive Drive and threatened to harm himself with a shotgun. He was eventually detained and brought to the hospital for an evaluation.
