This is the time of year when injured or sick seals start showing up in New Jersey waters and on our beaches. It’s also when the Marine Mammal Stranding Center comes in to save the day.
A Coast Guard crew out of Cape May and members of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine were unexpectedly called into action this past weekend when a massive leatherback sea turtle was spotted about 30 miles offshore entangled in a fishing net. The 800lb beast was successfully freed by the crew and swam back off into the Atlantic. Watch the video of the rescue below:
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is hoping to attract future volunteers by offering the public a hands-on learning experience on Long Beach Island this summer.
When a dolphin, whale, seal or turtle washes ashore, it's volunteers with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine that spring spring into action.
With 64 dolphins washing up ashore this summer, the non-profit organization responsible for the study of these animals is facing additional financial burdens.
