Tradition for Toms River (and a few surrounding towns like Beachwood) says that trick or treating takes place the day before Halloween becuase of Toms River's parade. It's how it's always been (as long as the parade takes place on Halloween itself). However, should Toms River and Beachwood keep trick or treat on Halloween instead? I grew up in Beachwood, so when I was a kid: we always went trick or treating on October 30 because of the Halloween parade in Toms River. After some scheduling adjustments the past couple of years, the parade is back on Halloween.

This year there was an outcry after Beachwood officials didn't move trick or treating for the community to October 30 right away. The mayor later announced that trick or treating festivities would take place on October 30th this year (and in the future) because of the parade.

Parade attendance these past couple of years has dwindled a bit, but a lot of groups participate in the parade. School marching bands, local scouting troops and more participate in the annual event.

So should trick or treating in the immediate area Toms River be moved to October 30th? I've heard arguments that kids who participate in the parade should still be able to participate in the ritual of trick or treating during their childhood. However, I've also heard that maybe this system is a little antiquated.

What do you think? My take: keep trick or treating in those towns on October 31. Make it simple for everyone in the area. Teams and organizations that participate in the parade, should have an optional policy. If parents choose to send their kids trick or treating instead of participating in the parade, that should be OK.
