Jersey Shore Congressman Andy Kim (Ocean & Burlington Counties) joined us in the WOBM Newsroom to discuss a number of key issues affecting the 3rd District he represents as well as the rest of the nation.

The Jersey Shore, as are many other areas, is still recovering from Superstorm Sandy and the storms that have followed.

Congressman Kim helped introduced a bill earlier this year called The National Flood Insurance Program Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2019 which is designed to help homeowners and businesses alike receive aid during and after a storm.

"What it all comes down to is affordability for Jersey families," Kim told WOBM News. "There are two different flood insurance proposals out there right now, and the one that is being pushed in the House of Representatives is just not good enough for folks here in New Jersey. (This) is why I've been helping out along with setting up another bipartisan effort alongside the other delegation members from New Jersey to be able to look out for affordability."

Kim says the issue with the proposal being pushed in the House isn't capping the premiums.

"We just don't want to see people have double digit increases year after year on their flood insurance plans," Kim said. "We also just have to have more accountability for insurance companies and others making sure that they're not scamming people and that they're paying out what folks deserve to get."

Kim says these flooding issues are constantly affecting the way of life for many in Ocean County.

"What I find really frustrating is I don't feel like a lot of the people (FEMA, insurance companies) that I've been engaging with that don't see what it is that we're trying to push on our end," Kim said.
