If you’re planning to fly within the U.S. and typically use your driver’s license or non-driver ID instead of a passport, you’re going to need a REAL ID.

But here’s the problem: everyone in New Jersey seems to be trying to book an appointment at the same time. The demand has skyrocketed, and spots fill up fast.

Need It Fast? Emergency REAL ID Option Explained

In response to the overwhelming demand, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) has launched three new initiatives to help more residents secure a REAL ID appointment.

Chief Administrator Sue Fulton shared: “Over the last few months, we've seen a dramatic increase in demand for REAL ID from our customers, and we've repeatedly added and reallocated appointments to better meet that demand. The new initiative announced today will expand access further, helping to service more customers who need or want to get a REAL ID.”

What’s New: NJMVC Adds REAL ID Appointments Statewide

1. REAL ID Thursdays
Every Thursday, NJMVC now adds 4,500 additional appointments statewide to handle the surge.

2. REAL ID Tuesdays
Starting May 20, 2025, an additional 5,200 appointments will open every other Tuesday.

3. Emergency Issuance Program
If you have urgent travel needs within 14 days due to a life-or-death emergency, expedited REAL ID processing is available for an $80 shipping fee.

What Documents You’ll Need to Bring for REAL ID

  • Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport)

  • Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2)

  • Two proofs of New Jersey residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)

  • Proof of legal presence (for non-U.S. citizens)

Don’t wait until the last minute. With new appointments dropping on Tuesdays and Thursdays, now’s the time to act before the lines get even longer.
