Prosecutors say a southern New Jersey man shot and wounded himself when police tried to arrest him on a warrant this week.

The Press of Atlantic City reports 51-year-old Carmine Maggio shot himself in the head with a small-caliber handgun at his Barnegat home on Monday night. He remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon and was listed in critical condition.

Ocean County prosecutors say Barnegat police had gone to the home around 7:30 p.m. to arrest Maggio on a parole violation warrant that had been issued in Arizona. They said Maggio then ran from his doorway and went inside a bathroom, where he shot himself.

Officers soon found Maggio, who was flown to a hospital.

Further details on the warrant were not disclosed.
