Parents Decide Not To Sue In Rutgers Webcam Case

The parents of a Rutgers University student who killed himself after his roommate used a webcam to see him kissing another man have decided not to sue anyone involved in the case.

Family attorney Paul Mainardi tells The Star-Ledger that Joseph and Jane Clementi are devoting their energies to the foundation that they established in their son's name.

The parents filed court papers preserving their right to sue Rutgers soon after Tyler Clementi's death in 2010. They accused New Jersey's largest university of failing to prevent his death. Since then, the University and the Clementi family have worked together through the foundation to bring awareness to social media and bullying.

His roommate, Dharun Ravi, last year spent 20 days in jail after being convicted of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and witness tampering. He's appealing.

Ravi’s attorney, Steve Altman, told the  Star-Ledger the Clementis’ decision not to pursue civil lawsuits left questions unanswered. "Somebody should ask them why, why they would not take action against Rutgers University or my client," Altman said, without elaborating.
