The relationship between a property owner and a tenant can be long and harmonious - or short and acrid. Each has rights, and each has responsibilities. A March 20 workshop in Toms River is designed to clearly explain both.

The Ocean County Court Vicinage and South Jersey Legal Services offer the seminar from 10 AM until 12:30 PM in the jury assembly room of the Ocean County Justice Complex, 100 Hooper Avenue.

Ombudsman Anne Marie Fleury tells us that it's a spacious venue, but if you want to be sure to have a seat, call ahead - 732-929-2063. You can also e-mail oceanlric.mailbox@judiciary.state.nj.us.

Legal experts offer a general yet detailed presentation, from entering an agreement to ending one, and even issues that arise for tenants and landlords after their relationships are over.

"It will begin with everything associated with a security deposit," Anne Marie said. "They're going to discuss leases, increases in rent, changes to the lease, and ending the lease."

Advisors will also cover the parting of ways, a time that rightfully has some dread attached to it but is nonetheless governed by unalterable rules.

It includes "the grounds for eviction...the court process is also going to be reviewed by court staff. There's going to be a discussion regarding things that happen post-judgement," Anne Marie says.

What happens when you're slapped with an eviction notice or a warrant for removal? What are the options? These are among the other points that will be covered.

Individual cases will not be under discussion. You're welcome to bring a pad and pen for notes, but court staffers will have writing implements as well as take-home information.

Ocean County's court system presents periodic, rotating seminars on a broad range of themes involving the law and you. We'll keep you informed as each one is scheduled.
