We have collected our fair share of Ship Bottom beach badges over the years, and we usually try to grab them early if they have discounted badges before Memorial Day Weekend.

When Did New Jersey Start Charging For Summer Beach Badges?

Believe it or not, it goes back to the early 1900s, when places like Atlantic City and Asbury Park started getting slammed with summer crowds. Towns needed a way to pay for cleaning up the beaches and keeping lifeguards on duty.

By the 1920s and ’30s, beach badges just became part of the routine… and honestly, they’ve been a Jersey Shore thing ever since.

• Season badge: $50

• Daily: $10 and Senior: $12

Bay Head
