A good plan is always a good thing. Whether it's your plan for dinner or your retirement plan, a good plan pays off and sets you up for success. Yes, being spontaneous can be good and even fun, but I think not when it comes to retirement. This is a serious topic and it has a huge price to pay if you are not prepared for your "golden years".

According to BOBankingRates, "Some dream of spending their retirement in an adventurous big city, others hope to live on a beach, while some plan to spend their retirement traveling. Others, though, look forward to the quiet simplicity of spending their golden years in a small town. As your retirement approaches, you might find yourself daydreaming of that quiet, small-town life — low traffic, no loud noises, minimal crime rates, etc."

Of the 21 small cities on the East Coast to retire in is right here in Somerset County, New Jersey. Making the list in the Garden State is Raritan. Key findings in the survey for Raritan include:

  • Monthly expenditures: $2,079
  • Average rent: $2,448
  • Livability: 81

So what do you think? Is Raritan a good pick for affordable small cities on the East Coast? Some of the other small cities that made the "affordable" GOBankingRates list include:

Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania

Brentwood, Pennsylvania

Stone Mountain, Georgia

Newmarket, New Hampshire
