When you live in New Jersey, community means everything. From neighborhood gatherings to local traditions, there’s a certain spirit here that brings people together.

When I think about my husband Nickey, I think of so many things but the first thing that comes to mind is how great of a parent he is to his son. Many of you know that we are a blended family, my daughter - Abby and Nick’s son - Kieran. Kieran is Autistic.

A Dad's Love That Sparked a Movement

Watching Nick’s love for his son has grown into something that has touched hundreds of families that is nothing short of amazing.

Back in September 2016, Nick wanted to create something special in recognition of Kieran and the joy he brings to his world.

His idea was simple but powerful: host a barbecue where families and children with autism could gather, connect, and celebrate together.

With the help from POAC Autism Services located in Brick, the very first event came to life. Even though it was a chilly September afternoon, the warmth and excitement of that day set something bigger into motion.

Community Support That Made It Grow

What started as a “one-and-done” idea quickly became an annual tradition. The Ocean County American Legion Family and its members saw the value and love behind this gathering and insisted that it continue. They were right. Each year, thanks to tireless fundraising and the support of local organizations, American Legion posts, Riders, Auxiliary units, Sons of the American Legion squadrons, and countless volunteers, the BBQ has only grown stronger.

From 150 Families to Over 600 Every Year

To date, this effort has raised over $70,000, allowing the event to grow from serving about 150 families to now welcoming 500 to 600 families every year.

What was once a small backyard-style gathering is now known as the End of Summer BBQ Bash, a joyful celebration that families look forward to all year long.

Nick’s vision, inspired by his love for Kieran, has become so much more than just a barbecue. It’s a day of acceptance, laughter, and community, It's a reminder that when love and determination come together, lives can truly be changed. And I couldn’t be more proud of him for building something that shines so brightly for so many.
