But here's something that always impresses people.

The oldest operating lighthouse in the entire United States is standing right here in the Garden State.

A Piece Of American History Still Standing

The Sandy Hook Lighthouse has been keeping watch over the entrance to New York Harbor since 1764. Think about that for a second.

This lighthouse was already standing before the Declaration of Independence was signed.

It has survived wars, brutal coastal storms, changing technology, and generations of visitors. More than 260 years later, it's still an active navigational aid, making it the oldest operating lighthouse in America.

That's pretty amazing for a place you can visit in just a day trip.

The entire Sandy Hook peninsula is filled with history, beautiful beaches, walking trails, old military buildings, and incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and New York City skyline.

Whether you're into photography, history, birdwatching, or just looking for a relaxing afternoon, there's plenty to enjoy.

The lighthouse is one of those landmarks that looks even more impressive in person.

Summer Can Get Busy

If you're planning a visit during the summer, be prepared for crowds.

Thousands of people head to Sandy Hook every week to enjoy the beaches, bike paths, fishing, and historical attractions. Parking lots can fill quickly, especially on weekends, so arriving earlier in the day can make the trip a lot more enjoyable.

Even with the crowds, it's absolutely worth seeing at least once.

My Favorite New Jersey Lighthouse

As much as I appreciate the history of Sandy Hook Lighthouse, I have to admit my personal favorite is Barnegat Light.

There's just something special about "Old Barney."

Whether you're climbing to the top, walking along the rocks at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, or simply watching the waves crash along the inlet, it's one of my favorite places in New Jersey.

Every visit feels a little different depending on the weather, and I never get tired of the view.

New Jersey Never Stops Surprising Me

People who don't live here often underestimate New Jersey.

They think of highways or traffic.

Meanwhile, we have incredible beaches, charming small towns, amazing food, beautiful parks, and landmarks that helped shape American history.
