5 Everyday Foods New Jersey Shoppers Are Paying a Lot More for This Year
If your weekly ShopRite receipt feels a little heavier this year, you’re not imagining it. From family dinners to after-school treats, several staple foods many New Jersey households buy every week have climbed noticeably in price in 2026.

Higher production costs, supply shortages, and global factors are all hitting grocery aisles at once, and shoppers across the Garden State are feeling the squeeze.
Here are five popular grocery items that have seen some of the biggest price jumps this year, and why they now cost more.
- Sirloin Steak is getting more expensive, especially when it comes to sirloin. Beef prices have surged in 2026 as the number of cattle in the United States has dropped to its lowest level in decades. With fewer cattle available, the cost of quality beef has risen quickly. USDA Choice boneless sirloin steak has jumped by roughly 22% compared to last year.
- Cheddar Cheese is another grocery staple feeling the ripple effects of a shrinking cattle population. Fewer cows don’t just mean less beef, they also mean less milk, which directly impacts cheese production. On top of limited milk supply, cheese makers are facing higher expenses for labor, packaging, and transportation. As a result, the price of natural cheddar cheese has climbed by more than 20% in some regions. In the West, shoppers are paying close to $6.90 per pound, about a dollar more than the national average. New Jersey shoppers are seeing similar increases, making even simple meals like grilled cheese or mac and cheese more costly.
- Chocolate Chip Cookies - Prepackaged chocolate chip, cookies often a go-to for school lunches and quick snacks, have gone up significantly in 2026. The cost per pound of these cookies has increased by nearly 18% compared to last year. Rising cocoa prices, along with higher labor, packaging, and shipping costs, are driving the increase.
- Ground Beef - Higher beef prices don’t just affect premium cuts like steak. Ground beef, a staple for tacos, burgers, and pasta dinners, has also become pricier. Tight cattle supplies combined with increased feed and production costs have pushed ground beef prices up nearly 15% over the past year. In some areas, shoppers are paying around $7.15 per pound. For New Jersey families planning budget-friendly meals, this price jump adds up quickly over the course of a month.
- Ice Cream - Dessert lovers are noticing changes in the freezer aisle, too. Ice cream prices have risen as nearly every ingredient used to make it has become more expensive. Dairy costs are higher, cocoa supplies have been disrupted by droughts in major growing regions, and chocolate-based flavors are especially affected. Add in rising labor, packaging, and transportation expenses, and it’s easy to see why prices have climbed. A half-gallon of prepackaged ice cream is now averaging about $7.35 in some regions, nearly a dollar more than the national average. Even a simple family treat now comes with sticker shock.

While prices may fluctuate throughout the year, experts say these increases are being driven by long-term supply issues rather than short-term spikes.
For now, sales, store brands, and careful meal planning may help soften the blow, but it’s clear that many of the foods we rely on every week are costing more in 2026 than ever before.
