Her gift of expression brings an exclusive honor to Eileen Huang of Lincroft. The 15-year-old High Technology High Schooler is one of five teens nationwide to achieve membership this year in the National Student Poets Program, announced by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities (PCAH).

Eileen and the members of the fourth annual class were chosen from more than 20,000 aspirants who submitted poetry for consideration. read their original works for the time in the White House, in a reception hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama.

The program is a collaboration of PCAH, the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, and the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Selected along with Eileen were Christy Hale, 16, of Florida; De'John Harges, 16, of Ohio; Anna Lance, 17, of Alaska; and David Xiang, 17, of Arkansas.

Each year, five young writers demonstrating promise are chosen to cultivate their talents through mentorships and workshops for writing and for leadership. They are given the responsiblity of being literary ambassadors, sharing their work, leading service projects and conducting workshops of their own.

Next for Eileen and her group is the Poets Forum in New York City, presented by the Academy of American Poets.

Tenth- and 11th-graders with ambition to be National Student Poets can enter submissons through Fall to the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The long-running scholarship program is considered the direct path to consideration for the National Students Program.
