4th district (R) Congressman Chris Smith brought township, state and school board officials together for a meeting on Friday May 25th. He told them that Acting State Education Commissioner Christopher Cerf has promised action to help close the township's widening student achievement gap.

Smith says Cerf promised to bring the newly forming regional achievement center to Lakewood to work with the board to find ways to help lakewood with resources and educational tools.

The Lakewood School Board recently fired the Principal of Lakewood High School soon after learning that half the Senior Class didn't pass the proficiency test needed to graduate. The school district was also recently rocked by the retirement announcement of the Lakewood School Superintendent Lydia Silva who served only three years in the district.

The school board went through recent overhaul of members with the new Board President calling for State intervention.
