Former Congressman and Philly Eagle Jon Runyan to be NFL’s chief disciplinarian

Former New Jersey Congressman Jon Runyan has joined the NFL as Vice President of Policy and Rules Administration.

One of his duties will be to represent NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell when it comes to on-field discipline issues. Runyan, a former player for the Philadelphia Eagles, would likely address issues that require a fine or suspension.

Runyan's position may come as a result of rumored changes to the NFL's disciplinary system after Goodell's direct involvement in several recent controversies, including Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and the deflation of footballs, accusations of child neglect against Minnesota Viking Adrian Peterson, and simple assault domestic violence charges that were later dismissed against Ray Rice.

Under Article 46 of the NFL Players Association collective bargaining agreement, the commissioner can appoint a representative to handle such matters.

Runyan will also supervise the league's uniform and protective equipment inspection program. The league said Runyan  will work closely with the Competition Committee, Player Safety Advisory Panel, head coaches and team equipment managers.

“Jon’s breadth of experience, from the gridiron to the halls of Congress to the NFL offices, brings a unique perspective shaped by leadership as a player and in public service. He is a welcome addition to our team as we work to advance and grow the game, and develop all football personnel and players," NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent said in a statement.

Runyan, who represented New Jersey's 3rd Congressional district from 2011 to 2015 and lives in Cherry Hill, said in a statement he is "thrilled to once again be a part of the NFL family and give back to the game that gave me so much. I am looking forward to sharing the experiences and lessons I’ve learned on and off the field with fellow NFL personnel, and I am excited for this great opportunity.”
