Jackson Liberty High School students watched their science projects come to life this week, after using cutting-edge technology to design, build and launch their own rockets.

Teacher Todd Engle said while most schools use rocket-making kits, his students designed their own using a 3-D printer, built them from scratch using different tools and then launched them on Wednesday.

The launch is the culmination of lessons and work using trigonometry to perform altitude calculations. Engle said most of the students have never even experienced trigonometry.

The rockets are about one-foot-high, and one to two-inches in diameter with fins. They were launched using rocket motors.

Engle said he hopes projects like this create a new generation of mechanical engineers.
