Jackson police believe that they caught a car burglar red-handed, and they're canvassing to see how many residents were looting victims early Thursday morning.

At about 3:19 AM on August 31, Officers Cherrick Daniels and Christopher Schinder were summoned to Leesville Road near Toshi Court, where a resident reported waking to her dog's barks as a man walked by her parked vehicle. The caller did not indicate that any of her items were missing, or that her car had been entered, police said.

A short distance from that house, the officers encountered a 29-year-old man carrying a duffle bag. He was arrested on the strength of a warrant issued in Howell Township and driven to headquarters, police said.

Inside the bag, police reported, was cash, electronicks, jewelry, clothes and other assorted items amounting in value to about $130. They believe that the items were taken from cars but had not yet been reported stolen or missing.

The suspect was released on his own recognizance to await a court date in Howell, and the items were logged as part of the investigaiton.

Anyone in the Leesville Road area who noticed that their vehicles had been entered, of who finds items missing, should call Detective Scott Conover, 732-9278-1111. And always lock your car and keep valuables out of sight.

Charges are accusations.Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
