Suspicious? Police Investigate Egg Harbor Twp Walmart Fire
The smoky fire that caused the closure of the Egg Harbor Township Walmart in the Oak Tree Plaza on Wednesday has left questions but few answers.
Here's what we know.
Fire Crews Responded to EHT Walmart Fire
At 11:37 pm Tuesday, crews from the Farmington and Cardiff Volunteer Fire companies were dispatched to the Walmart Super Center.
After finding heavy smoke coming from the rear loading dock of the building, additional support was requested from the Bargaintown, Northfield, Pleasantville, and Atlantic City International Airport fire companies.
According to a Facebook post from the Cardiff Fire Company, crews forced their way into the building and began aggressively handling fire and smoke.
Over the next five hours, firefighters worked to alleviate the excessive smoke in the store. A large ventilation fan was brought in from the Camden County Office of Emergency Management.
An Investigation into the Fire
The Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company said the fire is being investigated by the EHT Fire Investigations Office and the EHT Police..
6ABC reported that one employee was checked out for smoke inhalation after trying to put out the fire.
The Walmart store remained closed on Wednesday as the investigation took place and store employees dealt with smoky merchandise.
Although no one has given any official reopening information, people commenting on social media have said they heard the store may be closed for several days.
The store's online listing says it is 'Temporarily closed,' and no one answered on the phone after 7:30 am on Thursday, well after the normal 6 am opening time.
NJ.com reports a Walmart representative responded by email on Wednesday, saying, "We are temporarily closed but working to reopen as soon as possible".
If you are a pharmacy customer with the EHT Walmart, you may obtain your prescriptions at the Mays Landing Walmart while the Egg Harbor Township store is closed.
