New Jersey’s 5 Most Haunted Places That Locals Refuse To Visit After Dark
We may be a ways off from Halloween, but there's never a bad time to talk about New Jersey lore and haunted attractions.
I remember growing up and reading Weird NJ and thinking that I'd love to explore some of the creepy places the magazine talked about. Now, as an adult, I avoid anything that could be even remotely paranormal.

But like most people, I'm always fascinated by ghost stories and local hauntings throughout the Garden State.

5. The Spy House, Port Monmouth
Built in the 1600s, the Spy House has been many things, but was originally a tavern that was also used during the Revolutionary War to gather British intelligence.
Nowadays, it's known as a historic landmark and an extremely haunted building with ghosts, shadows, and figures in the dark being seen more often than not.
4. The Devils Tree, Bernards Township
Yep, a tree can be haunted in Jersey.
The Devil's Tree is supposedly cursed, and according to local lore, if you mess with this tree, it could spell big trouble for you.
Why you'd mess with a tree in the first place is beyond me, let alone a haunted one. According to some stories, even when it snows in the winter, there's no snow to be found near this tree. Spooky.
3. Burlington County Prison Museum, Mount Holly
You can tour this more than 200-year-old prison in downtown Mount Holly, and rumor has it that the after-dark tours get real creepy, real fast.
You can experience sudden cold spots even on sweltering days, and hear the sounds of chains clinking in the distance when no one's around.
2. Clinton Road, West Milford
From a haunted tree to a haunted road.

Clinton Road is notoriously one of North Jersey's most haunted roads, and rumor has it that if you drive this road at night, ghostly headlights will tailgate you, trying to run you off the road.
1. Ongs Hat, Burlington County
Ong's Hat may be one of the wildest ghost stories in Jersey.
This abandoned town has been rumored to house a cult at one point, a wormhole to another dimension, it's been said to house secret government experiments, and is known for several missing persons cases.
During the day, it's just a normal, dilapidated abandoned town in the middle of the Pine Barrens.
At night, it's nightmare fuel.
Are These Places Really Haunted?
If you believe local legend, then yes. Absolutely.
Jersey's roads can also be pretty terrifying, and they are 100 percent real. These are the scariest roads in the state
