This blog is about the Queen of Soul and the Queen of Pop and how both have provided enough great songs to basically be the soundtrack to our lives.

Today we learned that Aretha Franklin had died at the age of 76.  We knew she had been struggling with Pancreatic Cancer and today we got news of her passing.  It's one more loss for us, but one more addition to that awesome all-star band in Rock & Roll Heaven.  Much respect...

Today also happens to be the 60th birthday of the Queen of Pop, Madonna.  She is one of the most influential performers of our time.  Think about all the singers she has inspired over the years!  With a career spanning several decades, she has pushed boundaries, changed styles, and brought everybody out on the dance floor.

"Everybody, come on dance and sing.  Everybody, get up and do your thing." Those were the first lyrics I remember hearing Madonna sing.  It was the summer of 1983 and I was at a party at some cool kid's apartment in Manhattan.  I remember asking who the singer was and he showed me the album cover.  It was a black and white photo of a beautiful woman with awesome hair.  Apparently her name was Madonna.  I've been a fan ever since.

So if you had to pick a favorite song from Aretha and Madonna, one of each, what would it be?
