*Can landlords really do this in New Jersey?

*What's the answer to this question?

As temperatures plummet in New Jersey, a Monmouth County resident faces an unsettling dilemma. Can landlords really turn off your heat when temperatures drop. What are tenant rights in New Jersey?

I can't believe what I heard from one of my friends last night.

First, I'll set the stage for you and your opinions or truths on this. I can't believe this is allowed in New Jersey.

My friend lives in Monmouth County at an apartment complex. She received an email saying to the residents that live in her apartment building they were turning off the gas valve to use their heat, because they're getting ready for warmer weather. She can't use her heat now? It was cold last night.

Last nights weather in parts of New Jersey went below freezing. So, I asked her if she pays her own electric and gas or is it apart of the rent. She tells me she pays separately, it's not part of her rent. What? Can a landlord do this?

Maybe they can, I don't own a rental property or an apartment or condominium building. When I was talking to my friend, she said her apartment was 62 degrees. That's chilly and I'm sure it got much colder last night in her apartment.

I'm asking for my friend, if you rent, can the owner shut-off your utilities, even if you pay for it separately.

Then I was thinking maybe when there's a big building, a large building like apartments or condos, there's a system they have to do before shutting down a utility. I just don't know.

I do know, if it's cold, the heat should be on. I think of the elderly. I think of my Mom, she was always so cold. I would be so upset. I just can't imagine not having the right to turn my heat on if it's cold.

Please, let's help out my friend, if this happens again. Can the owners or landlords of apartment buildings in New Jersey tell you when you can put your heat on? I'm just thinking what if it's chilly in the summertime and I want heat. I'm going to want to put that heat on. Isn't that my right, especially since I'm paying for my own utilities?
