I recently had a cool experience. I wrote a fan letter to a voiceover artist whose work I've really admired. It's someone who, if you heard their voice, you'd definitely recognize it. He's a voiceover artist who has done a lot of very high profile work. I didn't necessarily expect a response but, to my surprise, I got one.

I basically just wrote to say that I recently came across some of his work that he'd done years ago, I recognized his voice from other things over the years, and I admire his work.

Usually, when you put those things out there, you assume that the person gets a lot of fan mail and probably won't respond, you'll get a form letter from an assistant, or worse, you'll get added to a mailing list without ever getting any kind of personal response.

But this person took the time to write a personal response, thank me for taking the time to write to him, and wished me well in my broadcasting and voiceover career.

And you know what? It made my day.

It just goes to show how much the smallest bit of effort can mean to someone.

I've had a similar situation from the other end before - whenever I happen to get email from a listener, I always try to take a few moments to respond, thank them for listening, and wish them well.

It barely takes any time out of my day, but it can mean a lot to the person on the receiving end.
