It’s been some time since we learned that Game of Thrones was likely to earn a seventh and eighth season renewal, which in recent weeks turned to reports of just 13 episodes between, but we’ve at least gotten an update. HBO has officially renewed the fantasy smash for Season 7 at least, without offering much further detail.

Just days ahead of the hotly-anticipated Season 6 premiere, HBO confirms that Game of Thrones will indeed return for Season 7 in 2017. No episode order was given, despite the usual run of ten episodes apiece, a number cast into doubt when showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss suggested Seasons 7 and 8 might have only 13 episodes between them.

In the meantime, so reads the Season 6 premiere synopsis for “The Red Woman”:

Jon Snow is dead. Daenerys meets a strong man. Cersei sees her daughter again.

And the overall Season 6 logline:

Following the shocking developments at the conclusion of season five, including Jon Snow’s bloody fate at the hands of Castle Black mutineers, Daenerys’ near-demise at the fighting pits of Meereen, and Cersei’s public humiliation in the streets of King’s Landing, survivors from all parts of Westeros and Essos regroup to press forward, inexorably, towards their uncertain individual fates. Familiar faces will forge new alliances to bolster their strategic chances at survival, while new characters will emerge to challenge the balance of power in the east, west, north and south.

In the meantime, check out the latest on the Game of Thrones Season 6 with trailers below, and stay tuned for the April 24 premiere!
