February is Children’s Dental Health Month and children without access to dental care will be able to receive it for free as part of a program from the American Dental Association. The Give Kids A Smile program will run Friday February 7th, and will have dentists, orthodontists, and hygienists volunteer to provide free dental care.

Dr. Miriam T. Furlong, orthodontist and President, Monmouth-Ocean County Dental Society will be volunteering along with other staff at her practice at Jackson Orthodontics.

“Last year in New Jersey, two thousand children visited 140 sites across the state. I would venture to say this year we will have increased participation,” said Furlong.

During Give Kids A Smile, children can get anything from a check up to more important dental procedures.

Furlong pointed out that out the number one childhood disease is tooth decay, something which is very preventable.

“Some of these children it might be as simple as a fluoride children or cleaning that could possibly save their lives in some cases.”

Furlong added reservations are required for many of the locations and advises parents to do it as early as possible.

Additionally, Children’s Dental Health Fairs will be held at the Ocean County Mall and Monmouth Mall of Sunday February 9 from 1-3pm.  Both fairs will be open to the general public, and are intended to promote dental health awareness for children and adults.  There will be entertainment, prizes, and dental-theme posters from local school children will be on display.
