Bringing you history of the Jersey Shore and around New Jersey has become a passion of mine and I love when I can bring you a story maybe you've heard and need some extra information or maybe one you had no idea about. Regardless I enjoy sharing local "Jersey" tales and as always if you have something to add or "correct" feel free to contact me, history often has many sides to a story.

This time around we are making a stop in Ocean County in Waretown. Waretown is home to the "Little Red School House" which is actually the "Little Red School House Museum" with some help from our friends at the Ocean County Library - Waretown Branch.

Going back in history, The Township of Ocean was incorporated on April 13th, 1876. The main village of this new Township in Ocean County was Waretown, located along what is now Route 9.

Children from "Waretown" began going to school in the "Little Red School House" in the mid-1850s and continued their schooling at the location until 1958! Wow, that Little Red School House was in use for over a hundred years. The Little Red School House was originally located on the current site of the Waretown First Aid Squad.

By the way....Waretown Elementary School opened its doors in 1958 as the town and the township continued to grow into the 1960-'s.

Next time you are traveling through Waretown, 188 Wells Mills Rd, Waretown, NJ 08758, be sure to check out a piece of Ocean County history, the Little Red School House in Waretown.
