LINCROFT — Authorities say a male student carrying a BB gun led to a lockdown at Brookdale Community College Wednesday evening, causing campus security to tell students to "shelter in place."

Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Spokesperson Charlie Webster said the incident actually began off campus when two students were walking toward the school. Webster said one student noticed that the other student was carrying the gun. When they arrived on campus, the student alerted Brookdale Police who quickly located the male and took him into custody, Webster said.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the male student with the BB gun. Webster said the student did not make any threats toward the school or members of the Brookdale community.

In a text message sent to students and alumni at about 7 p.m., the college said "the situation that caused the lockdown of the Lincroft campus has been resolved. There is no further threat to the campus community. Police will clear each building on the Lincroft campus in person."

The first text alert was issued at 6:45 p.m. stating "campus police has placed the Lincroft campus on lockdown. Shelter in place until further notice."

Brookdale Police could not immediately be reached for comment.
