I have spent almost four decades in the broadcasting field and done just about everything: sportscaster, newscaster, morning show co-host and of course this popular segment known as The Hometown View.

Over that time I have also done a lot of public speaking as it’s something I’ve been pretty comfortable with and I would guess that I have probably done about 1,000 appearances with most being an emcee at banquets, golf tournaments, charity events and more.  I was the guest speaker at my sister’s high school graduation, spoke when receiving an honorary degree from Ocean County College and have even delivered eulogies at funerals.

However last Thursday on North Carolina’s Outer Banks I managed a first: officiating the wedding of my nephew Dan Mueller to Nicole Beezley.

On a cloudy, cool, windy day there I was outside the Whalehead Club in Historic Corolla Park overlooking the Currituck Sound helping the two of them exchange vows and rings.  They made my first assignment as a Universal Life Church minister rather easy, choosing their own words for much of the ceremony. Of course I was able to add some personal touches.

It was an assignment that I took very seriously and clearly not one I wanted to screw up in any fashion.  I’m happy to tell you the wedding went off without a hitch although we did sweat out the weather forecast which earlier in the day made the prospect of an outside ceremony seem like a long shot.  However somebody from above was looking over the new couple because we managed to get it in and enjoy an outdoor reception as well under a large tent.

So now you know why I was away last week and if I ever do update my resume (last done around 1990) I will have to add this to it.  I join the likes of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien, Lady Gaga and Paul McCartney as notable ULC Ministers and this could be the start of a promising second career.

My wife has already agreed to be my agent although we have not discussed terms just yet.
