With the lifting of a crane this morning, a major milestone was reached in lower Manhattan.

The flag-draped, 408 foot spire that will eventually bring the new World Trade Center to a final height of 1,776 feet, began the delicate lift to the top of the massive structure early today.

The 104 story skyscraper is expected to be "substantially complete" later this year.
