Had a great extended weekend which included three spectacular beach days in a row made even better because family gathered at a house my brother is renting in Seaside Park to celebrate my son Brandon’s 33rd birthday on Sunday.

It was great spending time with those I love the most on the beach during what was one of the nicest stretches of weather we’ve had all summer.  As veterans like me will tell you on hot days it’s all about the wind and if it’s coming off the water then it really doesn’t matter what the temperature is.

I know it’s hard to believe but the high school football season actually begins this week with six “Week 0” matchups.  For that reason the season premiere of the Gateway Toyota Coaches Corner is Wednesday night on 105.7 FM and shoresportsnetwork.com.

Bob Badders, Ed Sarluca and I talk high school football from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. and we’ll do it during a live broadcast from the showroom of Gateway Toyota on Route 37 East in Toms River.

The first weekend of the season includes a meeting between powerhouse programs Red Bank Catholic and St. Joh Vianney while the Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week on 92.7 WOBM will find us at Central Friday night as the Golden Eagles host Brick Memorial.  You can read previews of all the teams playing this weekend and many others at shoresportsnetwork.com.

Manny Bowen’s up-and-down football career at Penn State is over after the school announced the former Barnegat High School linebacker was no longer a part of the program.  Bowen, a two-year starter, was dismissed from the team last season but reinstated last month after following guidelines set up over the past several months.

However, it appears he and the coaching staff might not have agreed on how things would play out in the future.  Bowen, who is on track to graduate in December does have a year of eligibility remaining and could use it as a graduate transfer next season.

You can argue about a lot of things but one thing we should all agree on is that not only was John McCain a hero but someone who loved his country as much as anyone.  Case closed!
