Why don't we talk about this more often?

Last week, I had a revelation when I found out that the 1979 movie The Amityville Horror was filmed in Toms River.  The house is currently for sale.

I posted about it in one of the local Facebook groups called Overheard in Brick, and the group members told me that there were lots of places in Toms River and Ocean County where the movie was filmed.

Before I get into that, here's some background on The Amityville Horror.  Per IMDB, it's based on a true story about a house in Long Island where a brutal family murder took place.  A new family moves in, and tries to build a happy life there, but they are haunted by strange and terrible happenings.

Here's a trailer for the movie.

A remake of the movie came out in 2005.  According to IMDB, that was filmed in Illinois and Wisconsin.

When they did the remake, I remember my Mom telling me it was based on a true story from Long Island, and there was a movie made in the 70s, but we never knew that it was filmed here in Ocean County.

It seems like a pretty big deal.

I should also mention that I still haven't seen the movie yet.  Since I am a lover of horror movies, I'll be adding this one to my list.

If you're curious to stream the movie too, according to Google, it's available on Starz, on Hulu with a subscription, YouTube, Apple TV, and more.

Here are all the familiar places you'll see when watching 1979's The Amityville Horror.
