A three alarm fire has caused significant damage to a vacant home on Norwood Avenue in West Long Branch.

Several fire crews and first aid squads were on hand at the three story home.

The abandoned home in West Long Branch once belonged to a former mayor according to News 12 New Jersey and the home dates back to the 1800's.

The fire chief told News 12 New Jersey Reporter Tony Caputo that the home has been abandoned for at least 20 years.

It's not yet known how the fire started or if there were any injuries sustained in putting out the blaze.

West Long Branch Police said the fire is under investigation at this time and the cause is still unknown.

West Long Branch Emergency Management has not returned a request for comment from WOBM News on what happened nor on the investigation.
