While walking on the boardwalk Sunday I ran into Joe Scott who was actually running along with his son Jack but stopped to chat for a few minutes.

Joe, a Pelican Island native, was hired in April as an assistant basketball coach at the University of Georgia under new head coach Tom Crean.

The former Toms River East three-sport standout spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Holy Cross and before that was a head coach for 16 seasons at Air Force, Princeton and Denver.  Scott was actually leaving Sunday to move his family to Athens, Georgia but hopes to make at least one trip back to the shore over the summer.

The Jersey Shore Basketball League opened its 49th season last night as for the third straight year the league will play its games at St. Rose High School.

Seaview Jeep, led by former Monmouth University standout Justin Robinson, is the two-time defending champions and will play their first game tonight at Stern’s Trailer.  For rosters, schedules and more visit www.jsbl.leaguerepublic.com and you can also follow them on Facebook.

The Lakewood BlueClaws open a 7-game homestand tonight and it’s one filled with some great promotions at FirstEnergy Park.  Friday is Star Wars Night featuring some special characters and BlueClaws players will be wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off.  There will also be post-game fireworks.

Saturday is Margaritaville Night and before the game they’ll be music from the Parrotbeach Band and afterwards post-game fireworks.  The homestand concludes on Tuesday, July 3rd with what is promised to be their biggest fireworks extravaganza of the year.  For more information visit blueclaws.com.

Lakewood won the first half championship and is headed to the playoffs after Labor Day.
