As of 6:00 this morning (Tuesday, September 1st) we can finally start working on that quarantine weight that we all put on these last few months as gyms in New Jersey reopen.

If you're planning to start working out again, there are a few things that you'll need to know before you hit your local gym.

Don't be surprised if you get turned away.

While gyms have been allowed to reopen for indoor workouts, they'll be limited to 25% capacity.

If you do get in, you'll get screened.

This one is something that a lot of us have gotten used to lately. Many salons have been having customers fill out health questionnaires and take temperatures when guests arrive. Gyms will have to do the same.

You'll have to keep your mask on.

I'm going to directly quote the state guideline on masking right from their website:

Require workers and customers to wear cloth face coverings while in the indoor portion of the premises, except where doing so would inhibit that individual's health or where the individual is under two years of age.


Group classes can start back up but you'll have to stay 6 feet apart.

In addition to keeping the now-standard 6 feet of distance, group classes are limited by space too, 1 person per every 200 square feet.

Locker rooms can only be used for restrooms and hand washing.

If you hit the gym before work, you'll need to give yourself time to run home and hit the shower.

No saunas or steam rooms for now.

Personally, I always thought that marinating in hot water with strangers was kind of weird, but if you don't, well, you'll have to wait to get back in the water.
