An Internet-based threat that sent Toms River High School East into lockdown this afternoon is under sharp scrutiny by township police.

Authorities say that safety precautions were initiated when they were notified at 12:08 PM about the threat that apparently arrived Thursday morning via Snapchat.

Police, fire and emergency medical teams combed the school but turned up nothing deemed unsafe. Dismissal took place at 1:35 PM after lockdown was lifted, police said.

Letters addressing the matter were sent home with each student, Superintendent David Healy said.

Detectives are interviewing a suspect, police said, but have no reason to believe that any threat remains.
