Rabid Raccoon Attack Reported In Collingswood, New Jersey

News reports are coming out of South Jersey (Patch) that describe an attack on 1 person and a dog by a rabid raccoon. Usually, raccoons really don't want any trouble with humans, although as we know, they can get into trouble and cause damage to homes and property.

According to Patch, two things are being investigated. The two attacks were in separate incidents in the Camden County town of Collingswood, New Jersey: one involving a human and one involving a dog. In addition, it is not confirmed if the attacks were by the same raccoon of possibly 2 separate raccoons.

Patch reported, "A Collingswood resident reported that their dog had an altercation with the raccoon at their home on April 8, officials said. Animal control was called, but was unable to find that raccoon."

In addition, "Then on April 9, another resident had an altercation with a raccoon while walking, officials said. Animal control was able to pick up the raccoon and send it for testing."

The people involved and the dog are being treated for rabies prevention. Officials urge residents and pet owners to keep their animals current on their vaccinations.  Supervise their outdoor activity and watch for wild animals exhibiting unusual behavior.
