Westbound traffic from the barrier island began moving again at about 11:50 AM. Eastbound traffic is scheduled to resume early this afternoon, once construction barriers are repositioned.

Toms River police and emergency management officials say the big rig from a New Egypt company, used to pull earth-moving vehicles and related equipment, smashed the divided in the narrowed eastbound passage leading to the span.

The driver was unhurt, authorities said.

The morning was spent removing the rig, which separated from its axles, and wiping up a sizeable diesel spill.

Conditions were worsened by the ongoing closure of the companion Mathis Bridge, undergoing a multi-year restoration.
